Helping an Elderly Loved One Feel and Look Great as They Age

Senior Care in Bethesda MD

As your parent gets older, they probably are feeling their age. They can no longer move as quickly as they used to, they have noticed a few extra wrinkles, and their hair now contains more grey hair than it did years ago. Although they are getting older, it does not mean they have to feel older. Seniors who live alone may not have the motivation or desire to take the following steps to look and feel great. However, if a senior care provider is hired, this professional caregiver can offer the elder companionship and support to make these healthy changes.

How Seniors Can Feel and Look Their Best

  • Socialize often. Elderly adults tend to isolate themselves from the outside world, causing them to lose the connections they have with family members, friends, and family members. Encourage your loved one to invite their loved ones over for a meal or just to visit. They may also want to consider signing up for a class at their local senior center or community center, where they can meet others who have similar interests. Socializing is a great way to keep their brain stimulated and to help boost their self-confidence.
  • Eat a nutrient-packed diet. The elder’s diet should consist of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and fiber in order to feel their best. They should refrain from eating processed foods because they are loaded with fat, sodium, and trans fat, which could be harmful to the senior’s heart and other parts of the body.
  • Sleep well. Sleeping problems are common among older adults. Some have insomnia and are unable to sleep at night, while others are always tired. The first step to sleeping better is by removing all distractions from the bedroom. This means the TV, radio, and phone should be turned off. The second thing they should do is create a comfortable environment by keeping the room cool, dark, and quiet. Creating a consistent sleep schedule will also help the better get into sleep mode at the same time each night.
  • Learn a new skill. In order to keep the mind young and vibrant, older adults should push themselves to learn something new. Is there a language your loved one has always wanted to learn? How about a musical instrument? Your loved one is never too old to learn something new, so encourage them to find a new passion in a new hobby.

With these tips, your loved one will be feeling and looking more youthful soon.
